Scott Pomeroy is a neuro-oncologist at Children's
Hospital in Boston. He is beloved for the exquisite and generous way
he cares for the bodies and souls of his patients – children
with brain tumors – and their families.
"Honest, direct and caring" are the words people use to describe Dr.
Pomeroy. The mother of a 13-year-old boy who has lost his sight and
his ability to walk unassisted during his five-year battle with brain
cancer says, "Dr. Pomeroy reminds me of the family doctor of old –
who knew you personally and also knew the dynamics of your family
– a doctor who related to the whole person." A father who lost
his precious daughter days after her ninth birthday says, "His strength
was invaluable to me at a time when cynicism, depression and despair
crowded out all vestiges of hope and faith."
Currently, Scott directs the neuro-oncology program which he established
in the neurology department at Children's. He also co-founded the
multidisciplinary Pediatric Brain Tumor Clinic at the Dana-Farber
Cancer Institute. As associate professor of neurology at Harvard Medical
School, Dr. Pomeroy is extremely dedicated to teaching medical students,
residents and nurses. As an investigator he is making great progress
in finding new ways to treat brain tumors.
More than anything, however, Dr. Pomeroy's passion lies in his compassionate
care of children with brain tumors. He cheers the successes of some
patients and weeps at the funerals of others. His support never ends.
A New Hampshire father describes how he invited his son's medical
team to dinner after his son's death but wondered if anyone would
have time to come. "Scott immediately called to say that he would
come and would like to bring his family (his wife Ellen, his teenagers,
Steve, Kate and David). Despite the circumstances, it was a wonderful
evening. But that is what makes Scott so special. He takes the worst
of circumstances and alters them through his own warmth and humanity."
